Cavern of Spirits A LitRPG and GameLit Adventure Stonehaven League Book 3 Audible Audio Edition Carrie Summers Annie Ellicott Jeff Hays Books Reviews
- I was debating over rating this book as a 3 or 4, but decided that the ending deserved a 4.
The MC Devon was somewhat pathetic in the beginning, leading me to question whether it was after effects of the episode at the end of book 2, something related to her mother kicking her out at 16, an attempt at humor, or the author getting sloppy.
The erratic pacing and confusing scenes continued until about mid-book, when possible explanations were forthcoming. This book was concentrated on real life - both game and friendship related. The budding romance was easily ignored, as there was little movement.
Quests tended to be simplistic and plots obvious.
The ending was optimistic, with some foreshadowing of future adventures outside "Champion" and city-building duties. The overall plot is linear despite opportunities to move in other directions. - I enjoyed both the in and out of game narratives, however the real world story had a problem. I have a hard time believing that a company would sideline the Moneymaker on the say so of his corporate rival. But I thought that the ending was good enough to make up for the plot holes. Tom out
- A fantastic addition to the series. Many old threads were resolved, a few new added. I really dug meeting Penelope and am glad she wasn’t a mustache twirling baddie.
I gave 4 stars because of some pacing issues. It took a long time to get to the core plot, and once resolved we jump back to the real world in roughly 2 paragraphs. It was jarring, especially with the slow start.
In any case bring on the next book! - Great story, excellent progression, good twists and unexpected tension! I really love these books, they're the perfect mix of game and real life for me. Too many times I see authors that try to shoehorn some weird convoluted logic in so they can ignore the real world in their stories. These books are the antidote to that! Hopefully book 4 continues the trend of keeping me hooked, I'm looking forward to it!
- The series is still going strong. There was a bit more real world stuff, which I traditionally wasn't as into, but it got more interesting. Surprisingly, the book also touched on some serious themes such as artificial intelligence, sentience, what is "real", and some of the merits of a VR game for those who couldn't otherwise experience some things, etc. Great book! On to the next one!
- Oh man, I really like these books they’re such a nice comfort read by now! I loved the plot twists at the end, and how somehow Devon is banging to cobble a list of friends and adventures outside the game as well. I hope we’ll see more of everyone, I just love how many lovely characters there are!
- Another well written and well thought out book, an excellent continuation of the series with plenty of interesting drama both in-game and irl. I'm happy to see that the characters have real depth and personality, even the secondaries. It also sets up plenty of new plotlines to continue the story.
- A lot of authors power up their characters too fast and get stuck on plot development. These three novels are moving along steady and true. The snarky exchanges between the game AI and the character are funny and help keep the drama in control.
